Meet The Back-Up Team | Birth Takes a Village

Offered every 6-7 weeks, Meet-The-Back-Up Night is a unique opportunity for you to meet the doulas who would be called upon if I was unable to attend your birth.

In order to have a reassuring back-up system in place, I have teamed up with carefully selected doulas based on our similar birth philosophies and approaches to doula work. If you choose me as your doula, I encourage you to join us for a Meet-The-Back-Up night to meet them in person. These evenings are also an excellent opportunity to ask questions in a group setting and hear from other families who are preparing for birth.

In addition, these women offer additional and complementary childbirth and postpartum services you may wish to explore. Please explore their websites to see what they have to offer!

Our shared philosophy:

The reason we have chosen each other as back-up team members is that we have similar knowledge, skills and birth philosophies. We all believe that birth is a healthy, natural event that unfolds best when we trust women’s bodies and protect the physiological process. We know from experience that promoting a private, calm and reassuring environment is the best thing we can do to allow birth to go smoothly. We all feel strongly that birthing women should be given the opportunity to exercise their right to informed decision making and we will attempt to facilitate that as much as we can.

When might back-up be used?

Since we never know when a birth will happen, there is always a small chance that any doula you hire will not be able to make it to your birth. Also, in the event of a long birth, a doula may need to call in a back-up to provide us with a break for sleep.

In addition, I take 3 off-call days each calendar month (for doula work to be sustainable, we need days off, too!). When possible, I don’t plan these days in advance and do my best to accommodate births around these days. For example, if I planned to have one day off and knew a client was having signs that her birth process might start soon, I would delay taking that day off  if at all possible (this is why it’s important to let me know if you’re having early birth signs). However, if I have had to do that multiple times in a month already, it is possible I won’t be able to adjust my day off around your birth. This is an unlikely, but possible scenario!
